Do Emergency Department Wait Times Impact Treatment Outcomes for Patients Presenting with Substance Use Disorders in the United States?
Abstract Background: Emergency Departments (ED) are a key source of healthcare utilized by persons suffering from substance use disorders in the United States. When patients register for an ED visit either through ambulatory, walk-in, or petition for emergency evaluation, wait times to be seen by a provider can influence treatment outcomes. Treatment outcomes include inpatient, outpatient, and maintenance treatment for substance use. Evidence suggests that on-demand treatment options provide a brief window of opportunity for patients to engage in substance use treatment. Objective: To assess whether ED wait times influence whether patients with substance use disorders engage in substance use treatment programs and what type. Search methods: We will search MEDLINE and screen reference lists of included papers and relevant systematic reviews. Selection criteria: All peer-reviewed articles published on or after 2011 that focus on hospitals in major cities across the U.S. Patients will be required to be above the age of 18 years and have an existing substance use disorder that is medically diagnosed. Data collection and analysis: We will use standard methodological procedures expected by Cochrane.

Utilizing a Spanish Language Parent Handbook to Increase Parental Support for Latinx College Students
In Latinx cultures, children are expected to live at home with their parents into childhood. This creates challenges for students to leave home for college. Parents often have little guidance to support students. I will be creating a cultural adaptation ADAPT-ITT model as well as interviews and surveys based on an evidence-based parent handbook that provides parents with education and support to stay involved in their students’ lives. The goal of this research is to provide support to Latinx families and students who are leaving home for the first time for college.

Aspects of Bến Tre Phonology
Ben Tre is a dialect spoken by inhabitants of Ben Tre province, Vietnam. Against the general belief from many community members and the dominant population of Saigon that this speech form is only an ‘accent,’ this paper seeks to establish Ben Tre as a well-defined ‘dialect’ by exploring its distinctive vocabulary that reflects a life bounded to rivers and fields as well as its unique sound system that sets this speech form apart from the ‘standard’ Southern dialect of Saigon. Based on the data elicited from a language consultant, this systematic analysis of Ben Tre phonology aims to generate contrastive inventories for vowels and consonants while also identifying available allophones within the dialect. Additionally, the study also carries an acoustic component that allows for a focused phonetic analysis to further investigate prominent phenomena of Ben Tre, such as fortition and lenition of consonants as well as vowel heightening. The result of this study not only is a testimony to the incredible diversity of Vietnamese that could push the boundaries of our current knowledge on the language, but also serves as a pilot study that offers great insights for future research on the larger areal dialect of the Tay region that Ben Tre belongs to.
