Living Memorials and the Perón Legacy: Absence in Food-Based Plant Varieties
The ways in which Eva Perón is memorialized shed light on the influence that the actress, activist, First Lady of Argentina, and icon for social justice herself had on social, cultural, and political landscapes around the world. Today, in Argentina and globally, there are numerous memorials dedicated in her and her husband’s, Juan Perón, honor. These include myths, statues, music, theatrical productions, monuments, museums, political speech, and the efforts they contributed to improving the lives of those in Argentina. These memorials seem to capture the public's eye, but one piece of Eva and Juan's memorialization still remains overlooked: their living memorials and the Eva Perón tomato. The Eva Perón tomato was developed following Eva’s death in 1952. We discover that, although the tomato was named in her honor, nothing of this original memorialization remains. With that being said, we are left wondering how the Peróns are commemorated through living memorials or food-based plants named after their legacy. Why do these plant varieties named after them fail to mention their historical significance, and what are the broader memorial impacts and affects through the absenting of the Peróns from these food-based living memorials? In this project, we delve into the idea of living memory and how a lack of recognition through living memorials shapes the ways in which we come to remember influential figures, such as the Peróns.

Spotlight on Suicide: A Content Analysis of Online News Media Coverage of Celebrity Suicide Death, 2012-2023
This study is a content analysis of six news organizations’ online coverage of celebrity suicide deaths from 2012 - 2023. News media does not generally report on suicide, but suicide deaths of notable public figures are an exception. Numerous studies have found a correlation between celebrity suicide deaths, volume of news coverage, and increases in population-levels of suicide deaths. This phenomenon is called the copycat effect. It is theorized that celebrity suicide influences suicide behavior for those with suicide ideation because of identification with the celebrity. Reporting specific types of information, such as the method of suicide, among others, has been cited as information which could further copycat behaviors. To combat this, several public health organizations created the Recommendations for Reporting on Suicide (RRS), which provides guidance on good- and poor-reporting practices. Previous content analyses focusing on analyzing news coverage of one celebrity death over a short period of time have found that news organizations do not typically adhere to the RRS. The current study expands on this research by analyzing 506 online news stories of 96 celebrity suicide deaths from 2012 - 2023 from six national news organizations. Articles are assessed for adherence to four good-reporting practices (e.g., providing prevention information) and nine poor-preporting practices (e.g., including suicide in the headline). The results of this study will provide public and mental health organizations insight on how to best respond to news coverage of celebrity suicide in the future.
