Creative Wellness Programs in Correctional Settings and Their Impact on Emotional, Mental, and Social Well-Being: A Qualitative Study of Lived Experiences
"This study examines creative wellness programs used in correctional settings. These programs include arts-based activities, hands-on activities, reflective or experiential activities, and mindfulness-based interventions. It explores how these programs affect incarcerated individuals emotionally, mentally, and socially during incarceration and after release. It also examines how participation in these programs supports rehabilitation and personal development. Existing research suggests that participation in these programs can improve stress management, self-esteem, communication skills, and coping strategies. These outcomes support both rehabilitation and personal development and help individuals prepare for reentry into society. The literature focuses on general outcomes, with less attention given to participants’ lived experiences and perceptions of how these programs influence their well-being and transition back into society. Limited understanding exists of how these experiences shape identity development, emotional coping, behavioral change, and long-term adjustment after release. This remains an important area of research that needs further development. Because of this gap in understanding, the purpose of this proposed study is to explore how incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals describe the impact of creative wellness programs on their emotional, mental, and social well-being. A qualitative research design will be used, including semi-structured interviews and case studies to gather in-depth personal perspectives. Participants will be asked about creative wellness programs and how participation influenced their personal growth, well-being, behavior, and preparation for reentry. This research aims to provide an understanding of which aspects of creative wellness programs are most meaningful from participants’ perspectives and how these programs can support rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society."
