Refugees, Healthcare Services, and Public Attitudes: Examining the Relationship Between Healthcare Impacts and Government Approval
The growing displacement of populations due to conflict, persecution, and environmental crisis has increased the number of refugees hosted by countries, especially in the Global South. Existing literature on the relationships between refugees and hosts has primarily focused on economic impacts, resource competition, and security concerns. While these studies provide an important foundation for finding out how refugees impact host communities, there’s been very little research done that explores the impacts on social infrastructure, particularly healthcare services. Healthcare services are a vital form of public service delivery and act as an important point of interaction between refugees and host populations. This study examines how refugee impacts on healthcare services influence host communities’ perceptions and attitudes towards their government. To test my hypotheses, I will conduct a regression analysis using Afrobarometer survey data to test the combined effects of refugee camp and health clinic presence on government trust in these communities. It is anticipated that the general presence of refugee camps positively impacts healthcare services and increases local support for the government, as the establishment of refugee encampments brings the arrival of international aid which improves social infrastructures in host communities, resulting in locals viewing their government as effective and legitimate. My study will add to the existing literature by filling in gaps in work that explores social and political impacts associated with the presence of refugees.
