No te metas, eso es de hombres: How Gendered Barriers Shape Women's Income and Success in Rural Mexico's Livestock Sector
Women play a significant role in Mexico’s livestock sector, contributing to production, breeding, animal care, and local market activity. However, their labor is often overlooked and undervalued. Women’s work is often treated as “help” rather than recognized as real labor. The calls for “No te metas, eso es de hombres” and “La mujer ayuda, el hombre decide” reflect the gendered ideas this project examines. This research argues that financial, structural, and cultural barriers limit women’s participation in rural Mexico’s livestock industry by restricting their access to income, resources, decision-making power, and financial independence. Using a qualitative research design, this project draws on semi-structured interviews with women involved in livestock-related work in rural communities in Zacatecas, Mexico. Research has shown that women already contribute meaningful labor to livestock systems. Still, unequal access to capital, land, and decision-making authority limits their ability to fully profit from that work (Galie, 2022). These barriers can prevent women from controlling livestock income, owning animals, purchasing equipment, expanding production, or developing their own livestock-related businesses (Vazquez-Garcia, 2013). This research challenges the idea that women’s empowerment in livestock begins with participation, because many women are already participating. The deeper issue is whether they have the power to turn their labor into financial independence. By centering this gap, the study shows that supporting women in livestock is not only a matter of fairness but a necessary step toward stronger households, more productive livestock systems, and more inclusive rural development.
