Your scholarly identity includes the many parts of your history and engagement as a researcher, including your education, employment, awards, collaborators and more—and it exists whether you are the one curating it or not. Taking control of your scholarly identity supports your visibility, credibility and transparency as a researcher and plays a crucial role in open scholarly communication. We will also explore other options like Twitter and ResearchGate. This workshop will be offered via Zoom. If you're registered, you'll receive the Zoom invitation information the day of the workshop. SNF Hellenic Center Book Club: Lysistrata by Aristophanes(10AM - 11AM) SNF Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture
This conversation is presented by the UCLA SNF Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture and the Consulate General of Greece in Los Angeles. Led by Professor Sharon Gerstel, Director of the UCLA SNF Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture, and the Honorable Christina Valassopoulou, Consul General of Greece in Los Angeles, this academic year’s book club will feature Greek books in translation. For future book selections and meeting dates, visit https://hellenic.ucla.edu/. The discussion will be held in English on Zoom. From the publisher: Aristophanes’ play, Lysistrata, takes place toward the end of the Peloponnesian War and centers on the lives of the soldiers’ wives. One woman, Lysistrata, under the impression that a man’s libido is ultimately his driving force in life, comes up with an interesting peace solution: to deny their husbands sexual relations until they can settle on a peace agreement that will end the war. However, Lysistrata’s strategy effectively creates even more war than before as the sexes begin to feud with each other. Aristophanes’ play is both comic and poignant as it reveals the relationship between men and women in classical Athens society. This program is held under the auspices of the Consulate General of Greece in Los Angeles and is made possible thanks to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF). Location: https://hellenic.ucla.edu/event/book-club-lysistrata-by-aristophanes/

The box office opens one hour before the event. In the stranger-comes-to-town narratives of The Brother From Another Planet and Man Facing Southeast, norms in the human world get shaken up by an alien presence. In both films, the strangers arrive on Earth under mysterious circumstances and, once here, unintentionally adapt to our world via their perceived empathetic gazes on marginalized communities. Their observations of human behavior lead to both comedic events and revelatory critiques of society. Without relying on special effects, these narrative feature films emulate their protagonists and what might or might not be their alien powers in conveying themes of otherness that are relatable even here among earthlings. Notes by Nicole Ucedo Location: Billy Wilder Theater
