Educational Innovation & Scholarly Teaching Seminar: Daniel Reinholz(2:30PM - 3:30PM) Teaching and Learning Center
Equity Learning Communities: Using Data to Enhance Instructional Change This talk focuses on the use of data to support equitable teaching. I introduce the model for equity learning communities, which has been developed over the past decade. Equity learning communities have been used to support the effective and equitable teaching of faculty in STEM fields and beyond. Out of this work, I share practical strategies that college instructors can use to promote an equitable and engaging classroom environment. I also discuss a learning process that instructional developers can use to support their faculty to better take up the strategies in an effective way. This presentation draws heavily from my new book, Equity Learning Communities: Leveraging Data to Transform Instruction in Higher Education, which will be available from Harvard Education Press starting Fall 2025. Presenter Bio: Daniel L. Reinholz, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at San Diego State University. Dr. Reinholz engages in transformative research on classroom equity in postsecondary mathematics. This work has been organized around the development of the EQUIP tool and the equity analytics approach, which focuses on generating actionable data to illuminate the subtle and sometimes invisible patterns that play out in classroom participation (by race, gender, disability, etc.). These data can be incorporated into robust professional learning opportunities through equity learning communities that support instructors to transform their teaching. Beyond the classroom, Dr. Reinholz serves as a Working Group Leader in the Accelerating Systemic Change Network, which aims to catalyze sustainable and scalable changes to STEM higher education. Dr. Reinholz is also a co-founder of Sines of Disability, a network of disabled mathematicians committed to addressing ableism in mathematics. Location: Powell 320

Archive Talks pairs leading historians and scholars with screenings of the moving image media that is the focus of their writing and research. Each program will begin with a special talk by the invited scholar that will introduce audiences to new insights, interpretations and contexts for the films and media being screened. Bombshell U.S., 1933 Beginning in the 1920s, studio head Louis B. Mayer and his wunderkind vice president of production Irving Thalberg built MGM into an image-making machine so potent that they could reveal its very workings in an evening’s entertainment and audiences would still be seduced by its illusions. Case in point, the outlandish screwball comedy Bombshell. Jean Harlow glitters as the titular starlet who keeps her studio and a comic coterie of hangers-on in the green with the help of an unscrupulous publicity man (the inimitable Lee Tracy) who spins their foibles and charms, alike, into front page headlines and ticket sales. The Archive is honored to host long-time Los Angeles Times film critic Kenneth Turan at the Billy Wilder Theater for this special screening presented in conjunction with his latest book, Louis B. Mayer and Irving Thalberg: The Whole Equation. 35mm, b&w, 96 min. Director: Victor Fleming. Screenwriter: John Lee Mahin, Jules Furthman. With: Jean Harlow, Lee Tracy, Frank Morgan. Emma Mae U.S., 1976 Also known as Black Sister’s Revenge, Jamaa Fanaka’s Emma Mae offers a rare, sympathetic portrait of a young Black woman adjusting to city life. Director/Screenwriter: Jamaa Fanaka. With: Jerri Hayes, Ernest Williams III, Charles David Brooks III, Gammy Burdett, Teri Taylor. Location: Billy Wilder Theater
