ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR COMMENCEMENT WEEKEND
This is additional information for students who have received their tickets for the events they requested for 2010 UCLA Commencement Weekend. The following subjects are covered:
- College Commencement Ceremony—Friday, June 11
- Coming to Campus/Parking Information
- Official Photography
- Ackerman Union Store
Please review these supplemental information advisories and, as appropriate for the events you are attending, print or forward them to your family members and other guests. For those participating in departmental graduation ceremonies on Saturday and Sunday, specific supplemental information about those events can be obtained from the relevant department office.
- COLLEGE COMMENCEMENT – Friday, June 11, 2010 – 5:00pm, Drake Stadium/Marshall Field
More than 4,500 students are expected to participate in this College-wide event, which is being held in Drake Stadium this year due to the start of construction for the Pauley Pavilion Renovation project. Because of the fencing related to that construction project, pedestrian movement along Bruin Walk will be slower than usual for the nearly 9,000 guests who are expected to join in the University's group salute to the Class of 2010. Unfortunately, because of this ticket demand and unprecedented level of student participation, no additional guest tickets can be distributed for the College Commencement. (Further, the selling of Commencement tickets is a violation of the UCLA Student Conduct Code, Section 102.23c; students attempting to sell Commencement tickets for any event may be reported to the Office of the Dean of Students and be subject to student discipline.)
Information is provided here about:
Please be mindful that the commencement ceremonies of three of UCLA's professional schools are also scheduled for Friday late afternoon, June 11, overlapping the College Commencement ceremony at Drake Stadium:
|
Anderson Graduate School of Management |
4:00pm |
Wilson Plaza/Janss Steps |
|
School of Theater, Film and Television |
4:00pm |
Dickson Court-North |
|
School of Public Health |
5:30pm |
Royce Hall |
As always, we expect that Drake Stadium/Marshall Field will be a very festive and happy place on Friday, June 11 as the members of the Class of 2010, as a group, are saluted by Chancellor Gene Block and the deans of the College of Letters and Science. At the same time, UCLA events are also known to attract individuals who wish to express particular viewpoints of issue of concern not necessarily related to the event. Such activities may occur on Friday, June 11 and will be monitored carefully by University staff. If you encounter such activities, please respect the rights of those to conduct them and please defer to University staff to respond to any problematic circumstances.
Students will be screened by security personnel upon entry as for items which may not be brought to the ceremony. For details as to the list of prohibited items which will not be permitted in the student assembly area, see the supplemental advisory sheet above regarding the Student Assembly.
All students are urged to wear flat shoes (i.e. no elevated heels) to reduce the possibility of a twisted ankle while walking on the grass of the Intramural Field.
- COMING TO CAMPUS
All participants and guests coming to UCLA on June 11-12-13 are urged to be mindful of local traffic conditions, particularly with the widening project on the 405/San Diego Freeway. Plan your departure time accordingly to ensure a convenient arrival time on campus. While UCLA has coordinated traffic management plans for local streets on June 11-12-13 with the City of Los Angeles Department of Transportation, traffic conditions are expected to be heavy at peak times. More than 40,000 guest tickets have been distributed just for the 30 different College departmental graduations throughout the weekend. With the other commencement events of the professional schools on Friday and Saturday and the special student group celebrations on Sunday afternoon, a total of more than 70,000 guests are expected at UCLA during the three day weekend for 2010 Commencement!
Before your departure for UCLA, you may wish to consider evaluating real-time traffic condition, which are available at:
Many students have already purchased the special Commencement Parking one-day permits for their families and guests. Such one-day permits may continue to be purchased in advance at the Central Ticket Office/James West Alumni Center through Friday, June 11. If you need to exchange a particular one-day permit which you have already purchased/received for a permit for another date, the exchange may be done at UCLA Parking Services, Strathmore Building. Vehicles arriving on campus without a valid UCLA permit or without the one-day Commencement Parking permit will be charged the regular parking fees ($10 for general parking; $3 for DP placard holders) by the parking attendants.
The following information about parking at UCLA during Commencement Weekend is provided:
Guests are reminded that the residence hall year-end move-out process also occurs during Commencement Weekend and, together with the construction of additional student housing facilities now underway, will affect traffic conditions in the northwest section of the campus.
- OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHY—DEPARTMENTAL GRADUATIONS
For nearly 10 years, UCLA has licensed Grad Images, Inc. to serve as the official photographer for most College of Letters and Science departmental graduations. This company also is similarly licensed by UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC San Francisco, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Santa Cruz. The photographers for Grad Images, Inc. works closely with the UCLA staff at the departmental graduations for the announcement of each student's name for the special moment of individual recognition.
The information about Grad Images, Inc.'s photography of each individual student at the graduation events and, for those students interested, advance registration on the Grad Images, Inc. website is provided here (click here).
Grad Images, Inc. will be at all departmental graduations except for: (1) American Indian Studies; (2) Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences; (3) Chicana/o Studies; (4) Earth and Space Sciences; (5) Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics; and (6) Neurosciences. GradImages, Inc. will be at Physiological Science for individual or group photography prior to that graduation ceremony, but not during the ceremony due to the ceremony's format.
GradImages, Inc. returns a portion of the proceeds from each sale/purchase to UCLA to benefit academic departments .
